Combat Vehicles

The workshop where you need it

06/11/2024By Redaktion

The German defense company RHEINMETALL has built a plant for the repair and production of armored vehicles in Ukraine in collaboration with UKROBORONPROM. Yesterday (June 10, 2024), the political opening of the maintenance base of Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defense Industry LLC took place in Western Ukraine. On this occasion, the Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries, Oleksandr Kamyschin, visited the site: "Together with our allies, we are committed to further developing our production capacities. We believe that the Ukrainian defense industry, as part of a European defense industry, strengthens the collective security system of the European Union. Therefore, the opening of a joint service center with Rheinmetall is not only a step towards victory for Ukraine, but also an important stage in building the arsenal of the Free World."

The hub is currently maintaining and repairing Marder infantry fighting vehicles. In the future, other locations in Ukraine will also be tasked with the repair of Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 battle tanks, as well as other systems produced in Germany.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: "It is our heartfelt desire to provide Ukraine with effective and reliable support. When it comes to supplying spare parts, our highest priority is maximum availability and rapid replenishment. To achieve this, we utilize existing channels through original manufacturers, work on materials ourselves as well as with partners. Additionally, we are reactivating original supply chains and involving local production in Ukraine." Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Dmytro Klimenkov, added: "The opening of the first joint service center with Rheinmetall in Ukraine significantly strengthens our defense capability. This facility allows us to ensure rapid repair and maintenance of German equipment directly on Ukrainian soil, thus greatly enhancing the efficiency of our armed forces. We are grateful to our German partners for their trust and support. This enables us to confidently face victory and integrate into the European collective security system."

Rheinmetall is leveraging existing infrastructure on site but has also brought specialized tools, spare parts, and other equipment to the hub. Ukrainian specialists were trained in the repair of combat vehicles at Rheinmetall locations in Germany last year, including industrial mechanics and mechatronics technicians. This personnel then returned to Ukraine and is now engaged in the maintenance and repair of relevant systems.

In October 2023, the joint venture Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defense Industry LLC was established. The announcement was made during the German-Ukrainian Economic Forum in Berlin, in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
