The Swiss Army is looking for a new artillery system and the 155 mm howitzer ARCHER from BAE Systems has made it to the final round.
ARCHER is a fully automated system specifically designed to keep pace with rapidly moving land forces. It is designed for quick deployment to rapidly respond to threats and provide superior mobility, lethality, and survivability.
Operators control the entire weapon system from the armored cab of ARCHER. In just 20 seconds, the vehicle can stop and fire the first shot. After completing the firing mission, ARCHER is ready to move again within 20 seconds. In less than two minutes, ARCHER can fire six shots and move 500 meters while the crew remains in the armored cab.
ARCHER can fire anti-tank ammunition BONUS up to 35 km, conventional ammunition up to 40 km, and precision-guided ammunition Excalibur over 50 km. The automatic magazines can hold a mix of various types of ammunition and modular charges needed for any mission. The system is already in use with the Swedish Army, where it has achieved the highest level of technical and manufacturing readiness.
