The U.S. Army has started implementing the Next-Generation Integrated Head Protection System (NG-IHPS) for around 2,000 soldiers of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. The new helmet system is designed to provide more protection and integrates "Next Generation" technologies.
The NG-IHPS replaces the Integrated Head Protection System, the Advanced Combat Helmet, and the Enhanced Combat Helmet and is the latest combat helmet of the American Army. It consists of a strap system, a mounting system, a helmet cover, and a mount for night vision goggles, into which a mandible protection, active hearing protection, the radio, a head-up display, as well as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System and the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular can be integrated.
The NG-IHPS was developed for close combat and can be combined with next-generation night vision devices, while a mandible protection provides an additional protection layer for six percent of soldiers who work mounted.
Major Matthew Nulk, Deputy Program Manager of the Head Protection Teams, highlights the superior ballistic and fragmentation protection of the NG-IHPS, which allows for a 40 percent weight reduction compared to previous models. "This sets a global standard for protection against rifle caliber threats," he emphasizes.
Alex de Groot, Senior Engineer of the Head Protection Teams, praises the screwless strap system (image above) and the night vision device mount of the NG-IHPS, which maintains the structural integrity of the helmet while improving protection.
The 2nd and 3rd Brigade Combat Teams of the 82nd Airborne Division are expected to receive the NG-IHPS later this quarter, with the full implementation across all combat units expected to be complete within the next three years.
Under the supervision of the Program Executive Office Soldier, responsible for the rapid development of prototypes, procurement, and deployment of equipment, the NG-IHPS is part of the Soldier Survivability Portfolios. This portfolio, the largest within PEO Soldier, also includes corresponding ballistic protection: the Modular Scalable Vest, the Ballistic Combat Shirt, the Blast Pelvic Protector, and the Vital Torso Protection Hard Armor Plates.
