With the implementation and operation of the so-called Data Center Federation, shortly RzV, a completely new IT federation is being established and operated in the BMVg business area at modern, expandable, and standardized data centers while considering the requirements of military security and information security. The provision of first data center capacities using state-of-the-art cloud technology is future-proof and ensures even better protection of critical IT infrastructures.
For this purpose, the Procurement Office of the Bundeswehr has today signed a corresponding contract with the in-house company BWI GmbH. In addition to the procurement and operation of IT components, the provision of the required infrastructure has also been commissioned. The project thus marks the beginning of a dynamic and demand-oriented provision of data center capacities. The data centers will be a key cornerstone of the digitalization of the Bundeswehr and for the armed forces in deployment.
The core of RzV is the provision of a cloud-based infrastructure for the operation of the private cloud Bundeswehr, shortly pCloudBw. This enables the central provision of IT services from a standardized and cloud-based IT infrastructure as well as the processing of data with different levels of confidentiality.
By using a distributed infrastructure and cloud technologies, a high level of resilience is created, ensuring continuous operation of critical IT services.
The in-house company BWI will operate the data centers with different manufacturers to ensure future-proof operation. A testing, integration, and development environment will also be procured for further developments and tests.
The provision of initial data center capacities is already planned for 2026, followed by the gradual growth of RzV until 2030.
