The European ground squirrel drags the best

07/16/2024By Redaktion

With great success, DIEHL DEFENCE participated in this year's "European Land Robot Trial" (ELROB), which took place from June 24 to 28 at the site of the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Landgestützte Fahrzeugsysteme, Pionier- und Allgemeine Feldgeräte (WTD 41) in Trier. 17 international teams from around the world competed against each other in five challenging disciplines in this robotics competition.

Diehl Defence took first place with the Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) Ziesel in the "Mule" scenario. In this scenario, a predefined route is learned in the follow-me mode in the first phase. In the second phase, the UGV must automatically drive the learned route. This is done under highly complex conditions, such as in a GNSS-free environment, in difficult terrain with high vegetation and blocked paths.

The Diehl Defence UGV is based on the Ziesel platform from Mattro. With its small dimensions of 148 x 123 cm (L x W), its light weight of 350 kg, and a maximum payload of over 500 kg, this vehicle is the ideal infantry support when it comes to transporting heavy equipment in the field. Due to its high agility, the UGV can accompany soldiers through dense forests without hindering them. Equipped with interchangeable 10 kWh lithium-ion batteries, the Mattro Ziesel drives purely electrically, without loud driving or engine noises, and reaches a speed of up to 20 km/h.
