Since June 2013 it's official. The Bundeswehr is getting new machine guns. The MG3, which is still based on technology from World War II, is to be gradually replaced by the MG5 from Heckler & Koch. However, the introduction of the new infantry main weapon of the German armed forces has been delayed due to ongoing design changes. Therefore, by August 2018 only 4,400 of the planned minimum stock of 7,114 machine guns of this type have arrived in the troops.
During the evacuation exercise Schneller Adler at the beginning of September, the MG5 could already be seen in action. For more pictures and further details on the current delivery status of the MG5, click HERE.
