Keeping you warm and dry when you're out and about is what CARINTHIA is all about. Now the company is adding to their line-up and bringing you underlayers that will work the best with G-LOFT. We just reviewed the Merino Base Layer, and now we speak with Falk Satzer, Business Development Manager at CARINTHIA about what the new CARINTHIA underwear line can do and who it's made for.
SPARTANAT: CARINTHIA is mostly known for well-insulated Cold Weather Gear. Now CARINTHIA has presented a new set of underwear. Why is the next-to-skin layer so important for Cold Weather Gear?
Falk Satzer: Our insulation clothing is based on the layering principle. From ultra-light cold protection for medium temperatures to the extreme arctic range. Maximum performance is achieved by coordinating the individual layers in terms of cut and weight of the polyester fleece (G-Loft). This way, by combining our cold protection clothing, you can respond flexibly to changing environmental requirements.
The base layer is of particular importance. We have found through the experiences of our customers that the use of different base layers has led to quite different performance, which we could not influence, as these items were supplied by other companies. Furthermore, the cut of the articles used did not always fit optimally with the layers above. This applies specifically to the sleeve and leg cuffs of long, heavy underwear. From our military customers’ side, the desire was expressed to develop a Base Layer that is perfectly coordinated with our cold protection clothing.
SPARTANAT: What was the development process like? What makes this set special?
Falk Satzer: The development took four years. We proceeded iteratively until we achieved the optimal fabric composition, weight of the knit fabric, and cut. In particular, during the testing phase, several special units from Europe were involved, with whose feedback we were able to continuously improve the underwear until we achieved a result with which we could be sure to meet the expectations of our demanding clientele. The challenge was to balance maximum comfort with weight and robustness, which is challenging at the respective maximum requirements.
Meanwhile, the underwear is in use by several units, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to our civilian customers now as well. The underwear is manufactured in the EU in compliance with the highest quality standards for raw materials and production.
SPARTANAT: What are the recommendations for wearing the CARINTHIA Base Layer? What should the user pay attention to?
Falk Satzer: Our underwear, especially the Light version, can be worn all year round. It is also cut in such a way that, when it gets very cold, the heavy underwear can be worn easily over the Light one.
FALK SATZER was a Gebirgsjäger officer in the Bundeswehr for 13 years, he has a degree in engineering (University of the Bundeswehr) and has worked in the defense industry for 15 years in sales, marketing, and project management. He now works as Business Development Manager at CARINTHIA.
The Merino underwear is available directly from CARINTHIA. The short CFT T-Shirt sells for 84.90 euros, the long CFL Shirt for 109.90 euros. The short CFT Shorts sell for 49.90 euros and the long CFP underpants for 99.90 euros.
