Bundeswehr remains a satellite

After approval by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag based on a 25 million euro submission, the two Bundeswehr-owned communication satellites "COMSATBw 1 and 2" will continue to be operated until December 31, 2028. To this end, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) triggered the contractually agreed option to extend the flight operation yesterday.

The satellites ensure the autonomous satellite communication of the Bundeswehr. This ensures the connection to deployed forces, for example in the Baltics, their communication with each other, and the networked operational command in the future.

The operation of the required satellite ground station was contractually extended in 2022. The uninterrupted continuation of the project is indispensable for national and alliance defense as well as for foreign missions.
