BOOKS & MORE: In your own four walls

The idea that one must defend their home is an archaic notion that has recently gained many followers. On the one hand: yes, one should, says the feeling. However, in a safe, western society, it is not up to the individual to use violence. And beyond all the self-defense fantasies that prevail, knowledge of dangers is more important than "playing hero". Trainer Andrea Micheli brings the topic down to earth with his book "Home Defense" and provides solid tips.

Strong sayings probably belong there. Orwell reminds us that order and security are guaranteed by people, such as those working in the police force, who prevent things from happening. Or, that laypeople are confronted with problems that fundamentally overwhelm them. Violence during a break-in is one such situation that we do not wish for anyone.

Our own four walls give us a sense of security. Every break-in is a massive violation of this feeling and has devastating consequences. Even the temporary increase in break-ins in the last decade has a massive impact on people. Micheli therefore starts with a chapter that deals with the psychological problems behind "Home Defense".

Micheli has a very good, de-escalating approach. There is a separate chapter that explains how to protect your house so that no threatening situations arise. This is ideal: avoid the conflict that you do not want. And therefore avoid all the dangers that could come with it.

Using a firearm in home defense means that one must also know how it affects them. The stone wall of a castle slows down the shot, while a modern drywall lets a projectile go through the neighbor's apartment. The weapon is not always the solution to a threat. Micheli shows the effects of using a weapon in a building. And - very importantly - the legal backgrounds are also explained very well.

In "Home Defense" it's about pistol and rifle and when it comes to action, Micheli shows the specifics of using a weapon at close range and shortest distance. We only show you this picture, the rest is in the book.

This also includes dramatic images of situations like this in a cellar with an attacker with an axe. Even in our own four walls, the question of proportionality in self-defense is not nullified. This means that the responsible gun owner must know exactly what he is ultimately allowed to do - and above all: what not.

Injuries are inevitable. Both perpetrators and victims need first aid. Thus, the book also provides information on the necessary first aid in case something happens and is based on military first aid: trauma first aid to save lives until help arrives. Just like shooting: practicing and learning is half of life. The book provides good information, but certain things can only be learned in professional courses and with serious trainers.

CONCLUSION: An exciting book that theoretically teaches the basics and prompts reflection on dangers.
