Books & more: Escape the Wolf

08/22/2013By Redaktion

Traveling is a risk. Maybe not so much for the average person, jetting off to Ibiza or Tschaorle. However, people who travel to foreign countries, which are not always safe, are exposing themselves to danger. Especially if they do not pay attention or do not adhere to local cultural codes. "Escape the Wolf" is aimed at American travelers. The book is 570 pages long and consists of several parts. The beginning describes the personal behavior and cultural awareness that are essential for personal safety while traveling. It also includes behaviors in case the threat becomes concrete, such as robbery, ambush, surveillance... In an interim part, an extensive Al-Qaeda manual is printed, describing how sleeper cells should behave in a foreign land. This cultural "blend in" is presented as exemplary camouflage. The book ends with a thick section that describes the different countries of the world and their particular cultural and local behaviors (quite amusing to read the descriptions for Germany and Austria). A useful book, especially interesting for people moving in risky regions of the world.

"Escape the Wolf: A Security Handbook for Traveling Professionals" by Clint Emerson & Lynn Walters, Dog Ear Publishing, 2010, 570 pages, 23.13 Euro (available on the website). The book is already available for the Kindle Reader for 8.02 Euro.
