Among the Gurkhas

03/25/2014By Redaktion

There are few books where one knows in advance that they will be extraordinary. "Arc of the Gurkha" definitely belongs to this rare class. Perhaps because everything about the story of this book is exceptional: Austrian photographer Alex Schlacher comes into contact with the British Gurkhas who are fighting in Helmand, Afghanistan, while working with US Marines. This is a unit with a great history: through the Protectorate Treaty of 1815 with the Kingdom of Gorkha – now Nepal – Great Britain obtained the right to recruit Nepali mercenaries for the British East India Company's army and later the British Indian Army. Since then, the Nepalese have fought as a regular unit at all the world's hotspots. With the first contact in Afghanistan, a long and intensive journey begins for Alex Schlacher: she gains direct access to the Brigade and accompanies the Gurkhas for two and a half years from recruitment in Nepal through their entire training, encounters them during many exercises and deployments, and speaks with their veterans from World War II. This book, the ultimate portrait of the Gurkhas, is set to be released in December 2014, just in time for the 200th anniversary of the Gurkhas. If it has enough pre-orders.
