Artillery ammunition: Higher, faster, further ...

01/25/2021By Redaktion

A NATO customer has commissioned Rheinmetall to deliver modern artillery ammunition. The South African subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition will deliver several thousand conventional and extended-range 155mm artillery shells from the Assegai family (Base Bleed and V-LAP), as well as several thousand propellant charges Assegai M92. Deliveries began in December 2020 and are expected to be completed by May 2021. The order value is around 25 million EUR.
The Tactical Modular Charges from the Assegai series of Rheinmetall Denel Munition are intended for firing artillery shells of 155mm caliber. They are tailored to the customer's weapon systems and projectiles to deliver optimal performance. Their modular design also simplifies logistics and handling on mobile guns. In addition, they have other positive features: Thanks to Rheinmetall Denel Munition's technology for reducing wear on barrels (Barrel-Wear-Reducer-Technology, RDM-BWR) they protect the gun barrel and, thanks to a special device (Muzzle-Flash-Reducer, RDM-MFR), significantly reduce muzzle flash. This helps protect against enemy reconnaissance.

"With our current product portfolio and the new products under development, we want to offer the customer all options for indirect fire support and maintain our leading position in the field of artillery ammunition technology. This is especially true with our new projectile developments, which aim to achieve a range of more than 155 kilometers," said Jan-Patrick Helmsen, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Denel Munition. "Furthermore, we want to support the soldiers with our new uni-modular propellant charges, which offer better performance and simplify logistics, particularly in gun systems with automatic loading."

Rheinmetall and South African Rheinmetall Denel Munition have recognized artillery expertise. In a test firing at the Alkantpan test site in South Africa in 2019, new maximum ranges of up to 76 kilometers were achieved from different guns. This demonstration of performance and capabilities has sparked interest among artillery users worldwide. Rheinmetall Denel Munition follows a step-by-step development approach aimed at continuously improving the range of artillery ammunition. The range demonstration showed the potential of the first phase and reinforced the company's goal of achieving a range of more than 155 km as demanded by the user.
