Given everything for Kunduz!?

09/29/2015By Redaktion

First very hesitant, then after confirmation by the federal government a message dripped and later ran through the media ticker, which is not surprising but still shocking for the soldiers who were once in action: KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
On television … Images of places and locations that are well-known, directly associated with smells and feelings. But in the familiar population … Ghosts that one had hoped to have pushed away and removed from their lives. Their sarcastic yet strong and unmistakable message: WE ARE BACK!
KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
Unfortunately, the climax that was announced over the past year. "Kunduz field camp decaying after Bundeswehr withdrawal!", even the media warned. This rapid decay of supplies, infrastructure, and fortification did not bode well. Although the field camp was still used as a base for access operations, what we mostly referred to on the ground as a small homeland, the MANIFEST of our BEING, is no more.
KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
Just as rapidly as the decay, the security situation escalated. The discrepancy between political decision and military, often realistic situation and decision became brutally apparent.
It is not conducive to inform a military opponent of the day of withdrawal – because then he knows how long he has to wait. However, politically and militarily of crucial value: to engage in dialogue with him.
Especially when what soldiers are meant to achieve has been accomplished: TO ENSURE SECURITY IN THE AREA or CREATE A MILITARY STANDOFF to force the ENEMY to the negotiating table. Negotiating from a situation of unilateral and even if only "presumed" strength, ... a dictate always triggers great resentments. History is full of them.

KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
Militarily an impressive performance by the Taliban. Politically a disaster and for us emotional, ... especially since we have given a lot, and some of us EVERYTHING. Bitter, when one remembers comrades, friends, brothers, walks through the memorial grove – and not only in a few days on Remembrance Day. There are no words, knowing what now "comes" and what it means to enforce the will to free KUNDUZ from its ghosts. Because:

KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
The fact that a country changes, that there can be arguments over an engagement, that there are different opinions about its EXISTENCE or its deployment, is evident to everyone. Those who spare their nerves speak about the experience – that is, the knowledge of having moved something – only in selected circles. They prefer to blur into the gray mass in everyday life. Only the knowledgeable see the small nuances here! A couple of desert boots under jeans, the paracord band on the wrist, the patch on the backpack, a fraction of a swan, peeking as a tattoo from the t-shirt. But to our now silent manifesto: "Gave everything for KUNDUZ" now also belongs the fact:

KUNDUZ HAS FALLEN!
