The Museum of Military History in Vienna dedicates the action week from Monday, 20.02.2017, to Friday, 24.02.2017 entirely to the topic "Children in War", with a focus on South Sudan. In the special exhibition room, the film "We Were Rebels" will be shown. Former child soldier Agel is the captain of the basketball national team of the young state of South Sudan and wants to help rebuild his homeland after the independence war. However, a new civil war erupts, and the conflicts within his team resemble those of the political situation in the country. The documentary follows Agel Ring Machar in the first two years after the independence of his homeland South Sudan in 2011.
The target audience for the action week is students who are working towards a general understanding of the difficult issue. Unique objects will provide clues to historically locate this phenomenon. Following this, a presentation highlighting current focal points invites general discussion. A short film will further clarify the horrors and miseries that war means for children.
Finally, the students will have the opportunity to ask questions to witnesses - Mr. Kon Kelei or Mrs. Garang Awuol, who have experienced firsthand what it means to be a child in war - to gain an even deeper understanding of the dangerous interplay between children, weapons, and war.
The director of the Museum of Military History, Christian Ortner (pictured left), refers to the museum's motto "Wars belong in the museum" and the associated obligation to actively work towards this: 154 groups with a total of 2,037 students will be engaged with the issue of children in war and can learn from it through the museum's educational program.
For guided tours, which take place from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm, a guide fee of €2.50 per student will be charged. Entry as well as accompanying persons are free.
