AK47, AKM, AK74, AK74M, AK12?

08/09/2012By Redaktion

The main weapon of the Russian (formerly Soviet) infantry has been shaped by the design of Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov for over 60 years, and the weapon depots are so full of AK74s that no more are being procured. Nevertheless, many consider the weapon to be outdated and are calling for an update. (In the image, a heavily modified AK of an FSB special unit)

A possible successor was the AN-94, which has been in limited use since 1994. Another competitor in the race is the new AK-12 (formerly AK-200). As The Voice of Russia reports, this new rifle is expected to be more accurate than its predecessors. However, whether it will be introduced, and in what quantity, remains to be seen.

The AK-12 brings the following innovations:

  • Ambidextrous charging handle
  • New safety and extra fire mode selector (Semi, 3-round burst, Full-auto)
  • Adjustable folding shoulder stock
  • More ergonomic grip
  • Newly designed top cover with Picatinny rail
  • Mounting rails on the handguard
  • Muzzle brake (on 22mm threads)

From the caliber selection shown on the poster, it seems that there are plans to export this weapon as well.
