Airsoft licenses - Real steel goes big business

Airsoft - who handles these weapons sees them as toys. Rightfully so, as they only shoot six millimeter plastic balls. For many years, they were produced in the Asian region, with popular weapon models serving as production templates. They were then distributed without licenses and sometimes even bore logos of the original manufacturers - without their consent. This naturally caused work for customs, as such illegal copies were destroyed more than once. However, looking at recent developments, one will see an interesting turn. Manufacturers seem to have taken a liking to it. Airsoft is probably a lucrative market. Or perhaps it is a strategy where one first buys a replica and then the original (if possible).

Because weapon manufacturers are cooperating with airsoft manufacturers and selling licenses or even actively working on an airsoft model. Here are a few examples: The KRISS Vector is produced by Krytac. Glock has its model manufactured by Cybergun and has now licensed it to Umarex, where Heckler & Koch is also running. Kalashnikov actually produces an airsoft model themselves. VLTOR sold their license to ActionSportGames (ASG). There could certainly be more examples. Here is a picture of an AK74 airsoft from Kalashnikov at the ARMY-2017 exhibition in Moscow. Some are powered by gas, others by batteries. Regardless, airsoft guns can also serve training purposes. This is of course more cost-effective and safer than handling a real weapon.

We hope that manufacturers not only sell their licenses and logos but also take the opportunity to incorporate the quality standards of their original products into the production of replicas.
