The German Tank Museum in Munster is being funded with eight million euros from the federal budget to ensure the preservation of the objects and enable a modernized exhibition.
After years of concept development and persuasion, from committee meetings, door-to-door visits, and on-site conversations, the military history museum can finally rejoice in being recognized at the federal level. The Defense Committee of the German Bundestag decided on October 10 that eight million euros will be invested in the Tank Museum in the town of Munster in the coming years.
"Such a sum is exceptional for a museum like ours. It emphasizes that the policies recognize both the special thematic importance of the museum as well as the factual developments in museum work in recent years and the forged future plans. We are very pleased with this development. We thank especially Lars Klingbeil who set the decisive impetus, and Johannes Kahrs who fought for this project. The application was not only brought before the committee by the SPD, but also by the CDU, so our thanks also go to this faction," explains museum director Ralf Raths the background of the funding.
In several discussions with members of the Left and the Greens, the museum has already presented the renovation plans even to these traditionally more critical factions in terms of military history and has also received positive signals here.
"I firmly believe that the Bundestag will follow the committee's proposals in its final budget deliberations in November and thus the way will be finally clear," said Lars Klingbeil (Member of Parliament) on his Facebook page.
The three old museum halls will be demolished and replaced by a new, large hall that fits into the image of the more modern halls. Then the entire exhibition will be renewed; additionally, the café and shop will be modernized, and an administrative building will be erected. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2019 with the demolition of the dilapidated halls. The museum will remain open during the renovation. The repositioning of the large exhibits will be shown to the public - most likely through online events.
The museum will continuously publish further renovation plans on Facebook, on Twitter, on Youtube, and on the Homepage.
