Rheinmetall, the leading system supplier for 40mm systems, has achieved a significant milestone in the delivery of Medium Velocity ammunition. In October 2020, the subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition officially handed over its ammunition for the Kamogelo project to the South African Ministry of Defense, the state arms procurement agency Armscor, and the South African Army. The special feature of the Kamogelo project lies not only in the procurement of a new 40mm Medium Velocity (MV) system, but also in being the first successful project of the South African Defense Forces' Expedited Armament Acquisition Process (EAAP).
In 2016, the South African Army initiated a project for a new 40mm grenade launcher system with related ammunition. The procurement plan was approved by Armscor in 2018. This was followed by trials with the Milkor Y4 multiple grenade launcher. This included test firing with Less Lethal, Low Velocity, and Medium Velocity ammunition in 40mm produced by Rheinmetall Denel Munition. The focus was on speed and accuracy. Here you can find all MILKOR launchers.
The South African Army has procured more than 20,000 rounds of Medium Velocity ammunition, including explosive, hollow charge/fragmentation, practice ammunition with and without tracers, smoke grenades, and orange marking ammunition.
The Medium Velocity ammunition offered by Rheinmetall Denel Munition has a maximum range of 800 meters, surpassing the available Low Velocity (LV) ammunition with increased range. It offers high precision up to 375 meters. Rheinmetall Denel Munition's 40mm cartridge portfolio in the MV realm currently includes nine types, six of which are part of the Kamogelo project.
"This handover of the new 40mm Medium Velocity grenade launcher system represents an important milestone in the history of the Ministry of Defense and also the South African Army," said Rear Admiral A. A. A. Morris, Chief of the South African Procurement Authority.
"We are proud to be able to offer our new 40mm Medium Velocity ammunition to the South African Armed Forces and thus to our domestic market," said Jan-Patrick Helmsen, Managing Director of South African Rheinmetall Denel Munition. "With this solution, we offer the soldier the ability to engage targets at high speed up to a range of 800 meters." HERE is the video with the Milkor Y4 in action with the South African Armed Forces.
The versatile 40mm ammunition range fills the gap in the infantry's toolbox between hand grenade and mortar. It therefore serves as a force multiplier for infantry and dismounted combat forces. Rheinmetall is one of the world's leading providers of ammunition, weapon systems, and fire control systems, acting as a one-stop-shop for 40mm systems.
Rheinmetall's widely used 40mm x 46 Low Velocity ammunition (LV, 78 m/s) is available in many versions, including high-explosive/fragmentation, hollow charge/fragmentation, and other combat and training rounds including effects like kinetic and irritant projectiles. The product portfolio is continuously being developed and expanded.
With the recent delivery of MV ammunition from Rheinmetall Denel Munition, Rheinmetall takes a significant step as a manufacturer of Medium Velocity ammunition (MV, approx. 100 m/s). The MV product range is currently being expanded through further developments in Germany. This includes a new generation of 40mm MV cartridges with a range of 800 meters. This doubles the range of the grenadier and allows for more precise shots due to the flatter trajectory. Rheinmetall's MV ammunition is currently undergoing NATO qualification. Both combat and training ammunition will be available soon. It can be fired from the Milkor US M32A1 and AV140 multiple grenade launchers. Additionally, Rheinmetall's magazine-fed 40mm grenade launcher (MGFL) is currently in development.
The company's 40mm x 53 High Velocity ammunition (HV) has a muzzle velocity of 240 m/s and an effective range of up to 2,200 meters. Here too, Rheinmetall offers an extensive portfolio, including new high-explosive and high-explosive/fragmentation ammunition with an infrared programmable airburst point (Air Burst Munition/ABM). The airburst capability makes this type of ammunition suitable for combating small unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), among other uses. It is intended for the Bundeswehr's Qualified Air Defense project.
Rheinmetall's fire control system family significantly enhances combat power. It provides the user with enhanced capabilities, increases accuracy, and maximizes the performance of the weapon and ammunition being used. The family includes various fire control solutions for higher accuracy and effectiveness: Vingmate FCS 4500 for grenade machine guns (HV) and heavy machine guns, MR-500 and MR-800 for LV and MV grenade launchers, and Vingmate SL 1000 for shoulder-fired weapons.
