The ongoing modernization of the vehicle fleet of the Bundeswehr also does not stop at the well-known and proven workhorse. It was already contractually agreed in mid-2024 that the aging light truck (Lkw) of the WOLF type would be replaced by a modern vehicle specially designed for military applications.
For this purpose, the Procurement Office of the Bundeswehr concluded a corresponding framework contract in July 2024, from which up to 5,800 light trucks can be procured by the end of 2032. With the conclusion of the framework agreement, the production and delivery of 1,200 light trucks has already been commissioned.
Today's order for an additional 300 vehicles from the framework contract completes the first batch. Due to the order volume, the order was approved yesterday by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag.
The successor model with the designation "WOLF 2" is also highly off-road capable and designed for the transport of up to four soldiers with complete personal equipment and armament in the versions of command vehicle and military police vehicle. The functional equipment with modern command systems has been considered from the beginning. Therefore, the vehicles are already prepared for the reception of radio and command equipment D-LBO upon delivery. Therefore, the project also makes an important contribution to the timely fulfillment of Germany's NATO obligations.
The use of the same chassis as in the already commissioned project Airborne Platform also brings synergies and advantages in terms of training and logistics.
The Bundeswehr received the first five vehicles contractually compliant in mid-November of this year. The qualification and operational testing is currently in progress with these vehicles.
Based on a successful and timely completion of the investigations, the delivery of the first series vehicles can be expected as planned by the end of 2025.
