EOTECH:

XPS vs EXPS

06/12/2025By Max

EOTECH has made a great name for itself with its ground-breaking holographic targeting optics - commonly referred to as 'red dot sights'. But EOTECH's holographic sights actually use a completely different technology than typical 'red dot sights' to produce their aiming reticle.

Here we will take a look at two nearly identical looking optics, the XPS and the EXPS, and show you what the differences are between them.

XPS in black, EXPS in beige

From the top, they look almost identical, only that the battery compartment on the beige EXPS is 2 mm longer.

From the front, however, you can see a noticable difference in that the EXPS is taller.

The side view reveals more differences. The EXPS is equipped with a quick-detach mount, which takes up space, and the EXPS has the control buttons on the side. This placement of the controls is especially practical when using a magnifier with the holo sight, as buttons on the rear of the sigh unit would be impossible to reach with the magnifier in use.

Here we see this clearly illustrated with the XPS having its control buttons on the rear, while the rear of the EXPS is completely clear.

The photo above illustrates the different mounting methods of the two sights: the XPS has a simple one-screw rail mount, while the EXPS has the more sophisticated throw-lever equipped QD rail mount. Choose whichever setup meets your requirements better, and also note the weight difference inherent in these two types of mounts: the XPS weighs only 255 g, while the EXPS weighs 317 g. Interestingly, the EXPS is also apparently more popular among shooters, and it is also available with different types of reticles.

CONCLUSION

The XPS sits lower on the rail, has the control buttons at the back and is slightly lighter. The EXPS comes with a quick mount, has its control buttons on the side, and weighs several grams more. Both optics offer you the same performance, but in a different layout, and at different price points. So, in the end, select whichever one best suits your preferences or needs - as well as your budget.

The full line of XPS and EXPS holographic sights are available on the EOTECH website and from many good retailers.
