HOW TO: Krylon, but right

07/07/2021By Redaktion

Psychologists often advise: Painting can be incredibly relaxing and help reduce stress. Even better if you give your equipment an additional camouflage paint job. The best way to do this is with Krylon, special spray paints from the USA. What makes Krylon so special and how should it be used correctly? We'll tell you.

Krylon is an ultra-matte spray paint, suitable for most plastics, and unlike typical paints from the hardware store, it does not require sanding or priming. It's not harmful, but not necessary. Krylon also has the advantage of drying quickly, in 15 minutes or less, depending on the ambient temperature. After 15 minutes, additional layers can be sprayed on top. Krylon is dry to the touch in 1 hour and chip-resistant after 7 days. So, it's a fast-applying camouflage spray paint.

Krylon is suitable for wood, most plastics, metal, wrought iron, hard vinyl, glass, plaster, ceramics, paper, wicker, as well as nylon and fabrics. The real advantage, however, is the solid selection of various camouflage colors and earth tones, which you won't find in the hardware store.

But how do you spray it correctly? First, you need to clean and degrease your workpiece. It's best to use lighter fluid for this. Acetone or nitro thinner can also be used, but be careful with plastics, as they may not tolerate it as well. You also need masking film and a few pieces of cardboard. Lay out the masking film generously and, if possible, secure it vertically, as spray mist can travel quite far.

It's best to spray outdoors, but if that's not possible, choose a very well-ventilated room. Indoors, pay even more attention to the masking film, or you could run into issues with your better half.

Once everything is prepared, shake the Krylon can well and start spraying. But be careful, in the image you see the correct method on the left and the incorrect method on the right. Let's go over what's wrong. The paint was applied too thickly from too close of a distance. This causes the Krylon to run and form bubbles. You can see this clearly in the video.

The paint is also running down in streams, as you can see on the right tab closure. Always apply the paint thinly and from at least 30cm away. We did it that way on the left side. You'll notice that the box is not yet perfectly beige, but that will happen with the additional layers of paint. Otherwise, the paint is evenly distributed, as it should be.

Now we want to show you the correct process on our 3D printed part. First, degrease it. It's recommended not to place your object directly on the cardboard you're spraying on. Otherwise, the part may stick, resulting in unsightly edges.

We used a tealight as a spacer to keep the contact area minimal. Now shake the Krylon can well and spray it evenly from 30cm away.

In our video on Krylon, you can see all of this even better in moving pictures.

The first layer of paint has been sprayed, and we're letting the Krylon dry. So far, we're very satisfied.

When the paint is dry, we turn our workpiece over and spray the underside. That way we have perfectly refinished our printed part.

If you're wondering what that thing is, that's our tripod-camera-scope adapter that we need for the reviews. Those were the basics you should consider when using Krylon and other spray cans. In summary, enough distance and thin layers. In the next part on Krylons, we'll show you how to achieve a good camouflage paint job. HERE at CAMOSTORE you can get the original Krylon.
