Medium Forces: The one inspecting the boxer CRV Recon II

07/18/2023By Redaktion

As part of his participation in the multinational exercise Talisman Sabre 2023, the Inspector General of the Army, Lieutenant General Alfons Mais, took the opportunity to visit Rheinmetall Defence Australia today. At the Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence, he, along with the Head of Equipment at the German Ministry of Defense, Vice Admiral Carsten Stawitzki, observed the production of the Armored Transport Vehicle (GTK) Boxer.

In Australia, more than 100 units of the so-called Heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle based on the Australian Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) will be produced for Germany. The basis for this combat vehicle is the Boxer wheeled armored vehicle, which is designed in Germany and produced in Australia. A corresponding framework agreement was reached by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a visit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last week. It is based on the cooperation declaration signed by Parliamentary State Secretary Hitschler in Australia on March 23, 2023. The Heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle is based on the proven Boxer vehicle family and is enhanced with a manned turret armed with a 30mm cannon. The goal is to begin introducing the first vehicles in 2025. The funding for this project is to come from the Bundeswehr's special assets.

Lieutenant General Mais said after his visit to the facility in Queensland, Australia: "We are opting for the version of the CRV Recon II adapted to German standards, which ensures our timely entry into the operationally important category of Medium Forces."

The changing times and alliance commitments across the entire spectrum of land forces' tasks require a broad range of capabilities in the Army. Material solutions that have proven themselves with allied partners or are in development and meet the most important requirements of the German Army are of great interest. The new weapon system of the Heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle plays a significant role. It is highly mobile and powerful. It can be effectively used not only in high-intensity combat but also in multinational stabilization operations and international crisis management.
