The Bundeswehr has commissioned Rheinmetall to deliver artillery ammunition. The framework contract worth around 109 million euros (gross) includes the delivery of over 32,000 projectiles with the option for an additional 11,000 pieces worth around 37 million euros (gross). Deliveries are expected to start in 2019. The contract has a total duration of five years. The production and delivery of the 155mm artillery ammunition is carried out by Rheinmetall Weapon Munition GmbH in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony.
The ammunition ordered by the Bundeswehr is the DM121 in caliber 155mm, which can be fired from the Panzerhaubitze 2000 up to a range of 30 kilometers. The explosive projectile with insensitive properties is also used for training purposes. This results in an annual consumption of several thousand projectiles. The delivery now being ordered follows an initial batch of 30,000 projectiles ordered in 2009.
The DM121 projectile, optimized for effective mass, carries several kilograms of high-performance explosives to a distance of 30 kilometers with highest precision, hitting the target safely. At maximum range, approximately 85 percent of all projectiles hit an area the size of a soccer field. Due to the quality components working together, the DM121 is capable of penetrating several centimeters of reinforced concrete and redirecting behind it in a controlled manner. With the assured function in a temperature range of -46°C to +63°C, the DM121 can be deployed worldwide with consistent high performance. The insensitive explosive not only achieves a significant effect on the target but also ensures the protection of their own forces in case of ammunition hits or other incidents.
