Rheinmetall has delivered the first Rheinmetall Mission Master XT to Norway. This is an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed for extreme terrain, capable of operating even at temperatures below freezing. Rheinmetall received the order from the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, responsible for research and development in the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, after winning a tender with high requirements regarding mobility and schedule.
Only a few months after participating in the "Artic Mobility Trials" in Finland, where the autonomy and mobility capabilities of the Rheinmetall Mission Master XT were demonstrated, Rheinmetall received this important order for the company. Despite the extremely challenging environment and temperatures of -30°C, the Mission Master XT was able to navigate frozen rivers and overcome rugged shore areas.
The Rheinmetall Mission Master XT was developed by Rheinmetall Canada in 2021 and can be used on ice, snow, sandy, rocky, and mountainous terrains. Its advanced amphibious capabilities allow it to swim – all without restrictions on payload.
With a weight of 2217 kg, this powerful autonomous robotic vehicle can carry a payload of 1000 kg, allowing armed forces, for example, to transport specialized equipment to hard-to-reach places. The diesel engine boasts a range of 750 km without refueling, while the internal batteries allow for up to 6 hours of continuous operation. Another key feature of the Rheinmetall Mission Master XT is its powerful continuous tire pressure system, which adjusts tire pressure to terrain conditions.
Like other platforms in the Rheinmetall Mission Master family, the XT vehicle is powered by Rheinmetall PATH: an AI-based navigation system that can be installed on any vehicle. This agnostic suite of advanced sensors and perception algorithms enables the Mission Master vehicles to autonomously navigate through challenging environments, evacuating soldiers from danger zones.
The Rheinmetall Canada team participated in the Norwegian Army Technology Days 2023 on August 23 and 24, including a lecture on "Accelerating Acceptance into Trust in UGVs."
