TAURUS is being modernized

12/25/2024

The Modular Standoff Weapon - short MAW - with the designation TAURUS KEPD-350 was developed in the early 2000s, has been in use by the Bundeswehr since 2005, and is still one of the most modern missiles of the Luftwaffe. In order to maintain the operational capability of the system, the TAURUS inventory of the Bundeswehr is now to be modernized.

For this purpose, the Procurement Office of the Bundeswehr signed a framework agreement for the second major overhaul starting in 2025 in the days before Christmas to initiate the necessary measures for the so-called capability retention at an early stage.

TAURUS stands for "Target Adaptive Unitary and Dispenser Robotic Ubiquity System" and is a roughly five meter long and almost 1400 kilogram heavy guided missile, equipped with its own propulsion system and mission planning system. TAURUS is intended for the engagement of strategically important targets over long distances. This way, the pilots do not have to penetrate into enemy airspace to launch the missile.

The weapon system can currently be used with the Tornado combat aircraft. The deployment on the Eurofighter is currently being prepared.
