The scar on Martin's face comes from a tattoo that he had removed after his stay in Syria. He didn't want to carry the tattoo, a small bomb, anymore after seeing what bombs can do. In 2017, he worked for a relief organization in Iraq, providing first aid to the wounded on the front lines. Later, he and his team went to the border with Syria to establish a hospital. For him, it was a very fulfilling task - creating something that lasts. Actually, he didn't want to return to Germany at all.
In spring 2018, he was sent on a new mission to Syria. On the day everything was supposed to start, Martin and a friend were kidnapped by Syrian security forces. They were taken to a prison in Damascus where people are tortured by the Assad regime. Martin is confronted with torture in captivity, sees a woman being raped, and soon believes he won't make it out alive. After his release, he decides that the tattoo on his face should be removed - but a new scar should remain.
