EUROSATORY 22: Köpfchen with ULBRICHTS

06/13/2022By Redaktion

At the international defense technology fair Eurosatory, which starts today in Paris, ULBRICHTS Protection is focusing on the topic of "Effective Head Protection for Soldiers." The market and technology leader for ballistic helmets in the police sector is showcasing at its newly designed booth (5H/451) that real protection against projectiles and fragments is also possible for military requirements. In addition to the reduced weight, numerous other innovations in terms of protection, comfort, and design characterize the latest generation of ULBRICHTS Protection's ballistic titanium hybrid helmets.

Soldiers wear their helmets for significantly longer periods of time compared to police forces. Accordingly, weight has been the main criterion for the selection of the predominantly used combat helmets made of aramid. While these helmets are very light and protect well against fragments, they show fatal weaknesses when shot at with projectiles. Even if the projectile is stopped by the helmet shell, aramid helmets have extremely high and potentially deadly residual energy values (trauma values). This energy is transferred to the head of the helmet wearer upon stopping the projectile and can lead to fatal head injuries.

Increased protection, reduced weight: real protection from 1.25 kilograms

After years of research, ULBRICHTS Protection has succeeded in bringing its proven titanium concept into the weight class of lightweight combat helmets. The latest version of the ballistic operational helmet HIGH CUT / JUMP – shown at the top in the lead image – weighs only about 1.25 kilograms without accessories. Despite its low weight, the helmet effectively protects against gunfire from a handgun (test level VPAM 3 HVN 2009, trauma values below 25 joules). By combining titanium and polyethylene, the HIGH CUT / JUMP also offers very good fragment protection. This high-tech product enables soldiers to have effective ballistic head protection for dynamic situations and long wear times – providing the same level of protection that is already standard for many European police units today.

In addition to the particularly lightweight HIGH CUT / JUMP, the entire VPAM-3 helmet range from ULBRICHTS Protection has also been updated. Through further development and improvement of the materials used, the manufacturer has achieved significant weight savings across the VPAM-3 helmets without negatively affecting the level of protection.

Furthermore, there is the option to achieve real protection against long gun fire through an additional visor. The module named FORTIS can be attached to the front helmet shell via a Velcro surface with a few simple steps. This ultra-light helmet variant is also capable of stopping gunfire from a Kalashnikov assault rifle 7.62 x 39 steel core ammunition (MSC) and achieving trauma values below 25 joules (test level VPAM 6, trauma values analogous to the European directive VPAM HVN 2009 below 25 joules). As a result, the ballistic protection of vest and combat helmet can be balanced. Body and head are optimally protected against various threats.

New CENTURION for Special Forces: Genuine protection against long gun fire without additional modules

The solution for special forces with increased ballistic protection requirements is now also available for military special units as a highly protective Direct-Action helmet from High to Low Cut. The CENTURION, the flagship of the ULBRICHTS helmet family, achieves a new protection level in the latest version: VPAM 6. While the previous CENTURION was designed as the standard operational helmet of European Special Forces for protection against handguns (test level VPAM 3), the new helmet can stop gunfire from a Kalashnikov assault rifle 7.62 x 39 steel core ammunition (MSC) and achieve trauma values below 25 joules (test level VPAM 6, trauma values analogous to the European directive VPAM HVN 2009 below 25 joules). This effectively prevents a potentially life-threatening skull-brain trauma even in the face of this acute military threat. The new CENTURION also provides a stopping effect against the NATO caliber 7.62 x 51 (.308 / M80 / NIJ III). It is the only helmet in its weight class on the market that effectively protects its wearer all around against long gun fire without additional shields. This real threat has prompted procurers worldwide to adapt their protective equipment.

More than just appearance: ULBRICHTS helmets in a new design

The latest helmet generation from ULBRICHTS Protection not only achieves particularly good protection results but has also been significantly redesigned externally. Protection, design, and comfort have been consistently integrated. ULBRICHTS helmets will no longer have screws on the helmet shell. This saves weight on the one hand, and on the other hand, the effective protection surface increases by 20 to 30 percent. Screws or the necessary drill holes are a known weak point in the helmet shell. They can also become dangerous secondary projectiles when shot at. Additionally, all ULBRICHTS helmets have an infinitely adjustable size adjustment in seconds and are therefore unisize wearable for head sizes from 48 to 62 centimeters. An intricate inner helmet system ensures an optimally centered fit. The new generation is characterized by further properties, such as improved modularity and practical features. Both the visors from in-house production and other accessories can be easily and flexibly mounted. The latest helmet generation clearly shows what it was developed for at first sight: real protection, dynamism, and functionality.
