Strasser RS 700 - Rebirth of a Legend - Part 1
08/06/2024By SPARTANAT crew

The RS 700 is the latest model from the Salzburg firearms manufacturer Strasser and combines the classic and globally popular Remington 700 platform with the STRASSER straight-pull bolt action system from state-of-the-art production. Our friend MAJOR FINDING is currently putting one to the test.

In collaboration with HMS STRASSER and MAJOR FINDING, we are presenting on SPARTANAT, as part of an article series, a comprehensive look at the RS 700 and its production. We will also explore what the European market has to offer for precision and long-range shooters to make the RS 700 the perfect rifle for us.

The Remington 700 platform first entered service with the US Armed Forces in the 1960s and was subsequently adopted by police and special units. Due to its simple and cost-effective production, it quickly gained popularity in the civilian sector, and by now the Remington 700 system ranks among the most widely used bolt-action systems worldwide.

In 2023, STRASSER completely redesigned their straight-pull bolt action system and made it compatible with the Remington 700 footprint. This resulted in the RS 700 – the world's first straight-pull bolt action rifle that is now compatible with the vast range of aftermarket products available for the Remington 700 platform!

The "RS" Straight-Pull Bolt Action System

The specific STRASSER straight-pull bolt action system has been successfully used in their hunting rifles for many years. Operating the bolt only requires two hand movements to load a cartridge. By pulling straight back on the bolt handle, the action is unlocked and the firing pin spring is cocked. Then, the bolt handle is pushed straight forward, extracting a round from the magazine, chambering it, and locking the action.

With a straight-pull system, the action is much smoother and simpler than in conventional bolt-action rifles, which is why this type of rifle is very popular for driven hunts.

At MAJOR FINDING, a RS 14 Evolution was tested back in 2019 in two articles and impressed with some truly ingenious features. With STRASSER's proprietary barrel change system of the RS 14 series, not only can the barrels be swapped tool-free within seconds, but one can also choose from dozens of different calibers. Additionally, the trigger weight can be adjusted tool-free and features a set trigger function.

However, with the RS 14, one is limited to STRASSER's own stocks, triggers, and barrels due to the proprietary system.

RS 700 – Rethinking Modularity

In 2023, STRASSER introduced their latest model - the RS 700. This model is also based on the STRASSER straight-pull bolt action system, but the external dimensions, material, and technology have been modified to match the external "footprint" of the Remington 700 system. This opens up thousands of individual configuration options: starting from barrels, through triggers, and stocks from the vast aftermarket sector of the Remington 700, one can build their custom dream rifle.

The basis is the STRASSER straight-pull bolt-action system, consisting of a bolt carrier, bolt, and receiver - everything else can be exchanged or adjusted afterwards.

STRASSER 700 Model Series

STRASSER itself offers the RS 700 model in three different versions: Legend, AVA-Tahr, and XRS Chassis

According to the slogan of the RS 700 series - Rebirth of a Legend - the "RS 700 Legend" is configured according to its roots. This model comes with a high-quality walnut stock with rosewood finish and an integrated M-Lok rail in the forend. For the barrel contour, you can choose between Standard and Semi-Weight, and it comes with a 3-round flush-fitting polymer magazine.

The AVA-Tahr model comes standard with the new STRASSER graphite-black or forest-green synthetic stock, an adjustable cheekpiece with push-button system, and an integrated M-Lok rail in the forend. This stock is only compatible with the Standard and Semi-Weight barrel contours and also comes with a 3-round flush-fitting polymer magazine.

As a third option, there is the RS 700 with XRS Chassis - in this case, an XRS stock from MDT is used. The Canadian company "Modular Driven Technologies" is one of the most well-known providers of high-quality and adjustable stocks and also the most popular brand for precision shooting and dynamic shooting.

The XRS stock is adjustable in length and has an adjustable butt pad. The forend provides enough space to accommodate even the thickest - "Long Range" - barrel contour of Strasser barrels and also features integrated M-Lok interfaces at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. If desired, the forend can be equipped with an Arca Rail at the 6 o'clock position - available as optional accessory from MDT.

RS 700 Barrel Action

Depending on the stock and caliber chosen, you can choose from three different barrel lengths and contours when ordering your STRASSER. If none of the three options appeal to you, you can also order just the barrel action without the stock (barreled action) and receive a fully assembled and test-fired "rifle" with trigger - just without the stock.

For the minimalists among you, you can also purchase only the system (Action) - consisting of a bolt carrier, bolt, and receiver. With this option, you have the maximum creative freedom over your individual rifle.

In the next articles, our friend MAJOR FINDING will take a closer look at the production and technology of the STRASSER RS 700.

More information about the RS 700 and other STRASSER models can be found directly at STRASSER in the meantime.
