Ruck & Bag

A good backpack that you can rely on is important when you are out hiking off the beaten path. WI OUTDOOR has a rugged yet lightweight backpack for you - HERE in our interview - Wilderness Survival Pack (WSP)

The WSP is made of 500D Cordura, which already makes it robust. The construction combined with 50mm webbing increases this robustness even more. The WSP offers you 26 liters of storage space and measures approximately 30 x 11 x 39cm (LxWxH).

The back of the WSP. Like everything on this backpack, this part is also kept simple. If you are looking for ergonomically shaped back padding, you will not find it. Pure minimalism that we like.

The WSP is closed with a roll closure that you can secure with a lock thanks to the D-rings. The practical thing about this type of closure is that you can adjust the height of the backpack depending on the load.

Looking inside, the minimalism continues. The WSP offers you two buckle closures as the only division, to which the included bag can be attached.

Here the WSP turned inside out, so you can see the small zippered pocket in a signal color well. You can also have a larger interior pocket and WI-Outdoor is also flexible with the color.

If you don't need the inner pocket, you can simply unclip it.

If you don't want to miss out on back padding, you can use a folding BW insulating mat for that.

The WSP is designed so that the ULAMA exactly matches the buckles of the inner pocket. Here, attention to detail was paid. We have used the WSP both with and without the mat as padding. We have to say that it is extremely comfortable even without the padding. Except for one time, but that was our own fault because we poorly packed the backpack and a corner pressed directly into our back. However, we quickly fixed this mistake.

We have been outdoors with the WSP in all weather conditions, with various loads, and each time we have come to appreciate its simplicity more and more.

An important part of a backpack is the shoulder straps. The ones on the WSP are 50mm wide and made of unpadded webbing. Initially, we were skeptical about how well it would carry, but we can tell you, it carries great. Thanks to the width, nothing cuts in and the weight is distributed over a larger area.

The shoulder straps are equipped with quick releases, as you would expect.

Very special is the lower anchoring of the shoulder strap. Looks a bit ugly at first glance, but it has a system. The entire WSP is designed so that you can easily repair it with a household sewing machine, or if necessary, by hand. This also applies to the anchoring of the shoulder straps.

Only ITW Split Buckles are used, which can be easily replaced without the need for sewing. We really like this basic idea.

The wide shoulder straps run in one piece over the entire back down to the bottom and are firmly sewn to the WSP bag. This ensures the very good load capacity of this backpack.

A small zippered pocket measuring 17 x 23 x 5 cm can be attached to the front of the WSP. You have to purchase this pocket separately.

The pocket is attached using snap buckles and the compression straps of the WSP. If done correctly, everything stays in place securely and nothing wobbles.

The WSP without the additional pocket. The two carrying handles at the front top and bottom are also very good. They can be held in the hand or lifted with both hands like a heavy package, both work well.

The WSP also wears superbly over a vest or plate carrier. Due to the minimalist design, the shoulder straps always sit perfectly, as padding is never in the way.

With a few additional tension straps and/or paracord, you can carry a lot with the WSP. In the picture, you see David with his dogs on an extended mountain hike. The WSP contains everything you need for a few days.

CONCLUSION: We like the Wilderness Survival Pack. Whether as an escape or EDC backpack, the WSP performs well. It also wears very well in combination with a plate carrier and can be easily repaired in the field, not that this has been necessary so far.

The Wilderness Survival Pack is available directly from WI OUTDOOR in handmade "Made in Austria" starting from 205 euros in the colors Black, Stone Gray (RAL7013), Coyote, Orange, Sand, Multicam Black, Multicam, Multicam Arid, Multicam Tropic. Other colors available on request.
