Review:
Modular Combat Pack 24 SL
09/20/2024

Smaller day packs for up to a maximum of 72 hours of use are always in high demand. With the new Modular Combat Pack 24 SL, TASMANIAN TIGER delivers a very solid platform with a new carrying system. But let's take a closer look at it.

Backpack

The backpack itself is simple but effective. It consists of a 19-liter main compartment and three attached pockets with a total capacity of 5 liters. This adds up to a total of 24 liters of storage space. Thanks to MOLLE/PALS on the outside, it can be expanded even further.

The main compartment measures approximately 48x28x12 cm and offers a large MOLLE hook-and-loop surface inside. There are a total of four small mesh pockets on the side walls, which are really practical.

There is a transparent zippered compartment in the lid. Also very convenient.

The lower exterior pocket measures 26x18x5 cm and offers 2 liters of volume. Inside, you will find a full-size hook-and-loop surface and four small daisy chains. Either to secure things or for cable management.

Inside, there are only two daisy chains, nothing else, but what else do you need?

The middle exterior pocket measures 26x13x5 cm and offers "only" 1 liter of volume. The most spartan pocket of all.

The energy bar is not included

The top pocket is the classic admin compartment for TASMANIAN TIGER. It measures 26x18x5 cm and offers another two liters of volume. Inside, you will find the familiar subdivision for all sorts of useful small items. Also, a zippered mesh compartment is sewn into the lid. Everything really has its place here.

Carrying System

What's really new about the TASMANIAN TIGER Modular Combat Pack 24 SL is the Y2 carrying system. It is very compact yet adjustable in all dimensions.

You can adjust the height of the shoulder straps to fit you perfectly using the ladder system with hook-and-loop. Something similar is already known from TASMANIAN TIGER. In this case, we were somewhat skeptical whether an unsecured hook-and-loop would hold, but it has held up solidly so far.

New is that the width of the shoulder straps can also be adjusted at the top. The padded straps are divided into two and nested together.

This allows the perfect length to be adjusted for everyone. This is done using the strap system at the top. A bit unusual to handle at first, but it does what it's supposed to do. It never adjusted itself during our test.

The hip belt is a classic TASMANIAN TIGER design with two side pockets. Thanks to hook-and-loop, the hip belt can be easily removed or replaced.

Details and Handling

The 24-liter capacity may seem a bit low at first, but thanks to the good organization, it is completely sufficient. With military backpacks, you always find many smaller exterior pockets, which is really practical. In civilian life, you always have to worry about pickpockets, on the battlefield, you have other problems. The quick availability of things from the backpack, without having to rummage around for a long time, is a huge advantage.

The compression straps are functional and can be attached either over or under the main compartment zipper.

The agony of choice

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of attaching them underneath is that the main compartment lid can be completely opened with one pull. The advantage of mounting them on top is that the lid is also securely fastened and everything can be compressed better. In the end, it's a matter of personal preference.

Conclusion

The TASMANIAN TIGER Modular Combat Pack 24 SL is a solid day pack for military use. The new Y2 carrying system can be quickly adjusted, making the transition from "wearing with a plate carrier" to use without it no problem. Thanks to the three exterior pockets and MOLLE/PALS slots, the equipment can be carried in an easily accessible manner.
