The new Logistics Command is working

04/14/2025

On April 29, 2025, the new support command of the Bundeswehr in Bonn will be officially put into operation, after already reaching full operational capability on April 1. With the establishment of the new support command, the special challenge of distributing scarce key capabilities in the Bundeswehr is being addressed. In the photo above: Various vehicles, including front BMW 206 S Hägglunds of the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23, are ready for loading at the port of Emden for Exercise Nordic Response as part of the QUADRIGA exercise series on February 16, 2024.

One of these key capabilities is logistics coordination. It is being incorporated into the support area by the Bundeswehr Logistics Command in Erfurt. It has around 16,000 posts, accounting for a third of the total personnel in the support area.

The Bundeswehr Logistics Command ensures all basic logistics services within Germany and going out from Germany are taken care of. The mobile logistics troops form a network in the operational area and are capable of supplying all Bundeswehr forces with spare parts, ammunition, fuel, merchandise, and mail, as well as carrying out repair work. Goods are transshipped by land, air, and sea, stored in logistics facilities, and supplied to the operational logistics.

In the operational area, the mobile logistics troops of base logistics maintain their own materiel. In addition, they are able to set up and operate field camps and field tank farms with the Special Pioneer Regiment 164 in Husum. The Special Pioneer Regiment 164 also has the ability to repair pipeline systems, drill wells, and treat water. The services of the mobile logistics troops of basic logistics in the operation are coordinated by the logistics regiments. The services of third parties, such as commercial service providers and allies, are actively involved in the operation.

The commander of the Logistics Command, Major General Jochen Deuter, is also the Bundeswehr Logistics General. Below the Federal Ministry of Defense, he bears overall responsibility for the management, coordination, and further development of the logistical system throughout the Bundeswehr.

To fulfill these tasks, the commander of the Bundeswehr Logistics Command is subordinate to the Bundeswehr Logistics Center, the Bundeswehr Logistics School, the Bundeswehr Center for Motor Vehicles, and the mobile logistics troops with two regiments and eight battalions.
