COSMAS Chamoix GTX

02/18/2025

"In di Berg bin i gern …" (German: "I like being in the mountains ...") - that's what the "Schluchtenscheißer" allegedly sing every day and if you don't have to walk through the lowlands of the all too flat countryside as a German, then shoes are really important. Not to say vital. That's when it's time to say goodbye to tourist slippers and sneakers, and you need a pair of pants that reflects the toughness of the terrain you have to trek. We went up the mountain with our COSMAS Chamoix GTX from JOLLY SCARPE. And we did it multiple times, because they like it.

These are the Chamoix. Still pristine from delivery, but already eager for action. Somehow, they are already the summit themselves with a shaft height of over twenty centimeters and not lightweight either. Something that should withstand needs quality, which the COSMAS Chamoix GTX brings to the mountain. And it even weighs almost two kilograms per pair. Not the light hiking shoe for casual wear, but it doesn't belong where we go.

View inside the shaft: It's a real chasm that the foot must pass through, but well-padded and ready to securely embrace the lower leg.

It's all about the inner values, our wife always says, and they are right here: GORE-TEX® Performance Comfort Footwear lining provides the best protection and comfort under different climatic conditions. Below that, there's a sole made of PU and rubber, antistatic, oil-resistant, and contact heat-resistant up to 300°C. That's safety, the tank among mountain shoes.

Now, let's talk about the external features, with the pleasant brown upper material: the manufacturer has chosen water-repellent Nubuck leather with a thickness of 2.4 - 2.6 mm. As they assure, it exceeds the EN ISO 20347 5.4.6 norm in terms of breathability by 500%, resulting in exceptionally high comfort throughout the day. Norms don't interest us as much as the manufacturer himself, but the mountain shoe is really comfortable under various wear conditions and does exactly what we expect from it.

Well-laced is half done. After putting them on, the lacing ensures an ideal, snug fit in the shoe. And it's super easy to lace them up, with D-rings over the instep and then with hooks above. An ideal combination that guarantees quick, secure lacing.

How tight one wants to sit in the shaft can be decided by each individual. A little more play is pleasant in flatter terrain, but when it gets steep, we tighten them up.

This is what makes the mountain shoe so durable: the continuous rubber strip protects the leather from hitting against stone, scree, wood, and thus from wear and tear.

This is particularly important over the toes, because we use them to drive the shoe into steep terrain. Neither ice nor rock leave marks on the leather, the rubber does what it's supposed to do. Protect.

The hooks at the back are also excellently shaped. The manufacturer is very proud to have broken yet another norm: energy absorption in the heel, which exceeds the requirements of the EN ISO 20347 6.2.4 norm by 40%, making the boot particularly suitable for long and strenuous missions. Or simply drive the hooks into the ground when moving upwards and go down the slope with the Chamoix as if walking on steps.

This is the terrain we walk on here: The sole is antistatic, oil and fuel resistant, as well as penetration resistant, ensured by a sole made of multi-layer functional fabric. This is great, and at the same time, the shoe is naturally not the one that "rolls" on this sole anymore. Here it's almost more like a board that you step on. But that's exactly the stiff rigidity we want in the mountains.

We're solidly traversing the green meadows of the alp with the COSMAS Chamoix GTX and even entering the "Kuhfladia Alpina", the ever-blooming alpenrose, is not a challenge for the shoe, except that it likes to leave its prints in the soft material.

The waterproof and breathable upper material of the boot exceeds the EN ISO 20347 5.4.6 norm in terms of breathability by 500%, the manufacturer is delighted once again. We simply say: the COSMAS Chamoix GTX with its leather and GORE-TEX is reliably waterproof and has no issues crossing puddles, streams, and wet meadows, as we find them in the early morning dew in the mountains.

He's not afraid of the horrors of ice either. The thick, fat sole, the manufacturer cheers, provides heat insulation, which exceeds the requirements of the European standard EN ISO 20347 6.2.3.1 (sandbath) by 30%, making it excellently suited for cold environments. You can even stand guard in the snow without any problems if your superiors are interested.

Rocky would be thrilled: at the rock, our COSMAS also feels at home. Nothing pushes through, you stand stable when walking through the gravel field. The wearing comfort is further enhanced by the PU midsole, which ensures optimal grip on uneven terrain. This heavy mountain boot likes rough terrain.

Those who step onto the quad with it will also find it there, a duty boot for many occasions. And still flexible enough to accelerate.

There they are, lying calmly in the trunk, the pair recovers from the mountain and is already looking forward to being taken up again next time. On our legs, we are now cheating and have preferred light approach shoes in the valley.

CONCLUSION: The COSMAS Chamoix GTX is a tough all-rounder, made for exertions in the forest and mountains. Waterproof, cold-resistant, a duty boot that you will hold dear because you know it will never leave you or fail. A tank for the terrain, tough and heavy, that's how it should be. We in the mountains say: "These are the real bucks." That is the greatest praise that can be given to such a shoe after the hike to the summit.

You can get the COSMAS Chamoix GTX at all retailers who carry COSMAS and they cost a solid 299 euros per pair. We suspect that, the way they are built, they are an investment for life.JOLLY SCARPE is represented in Germany and Austria by TEUTODEFENCE
