Austria is investing around 560 million euros in innovations for the tank troops. In this context, on December 19, 2022, GDELS-Steyr was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence with the extension of the service life of the SPz ULAN introduced in the Austrian Armed Forces (ÖBH) since 2002.
The project includes the complete overhaul and modernization of obsolete systems, especially in the areas of optronics, electrical, and electronics of the entire fleet of a total of 112 infantry fighting vehicles. The order, with a volume of around 370 million euros, is the result of a pre-conducted obsolescence study, which was carried out in close coordination between the Austrian Armed Forces, the general contractor GDELS-Steyr, and its project partners. All information about the ULAN at the Austrian Armed Forces.
The SPz ULAN was adapted to the requirements of the Austrian Armed Forces at the end of the 1990s based on the Austrian-Spanish development program ASCOD (Austrian Spanish Cooperative Development) and handed over to the troops in the years 2002 - 2004. The further development of the ASCOD platform underscores GDELS-Steyr's expertise in the tracked vehicle sector as well as the development potential of the ULAN. Austria, along with Spain, Great Britain, and the Philippines, is one of four user nations which collectively have more than 1000 vehicles in use or in the pipeline.
