Who invented it? Well, not the Swiss ... But never mind, because the Swiss Army is buying a new assault rifle - more specifically for special forces and military police. The American LMT MARS-L Shovelnose, in 16- and 12-inch barrel lengths, is being procured for certain units under the military designations STGW 25 and STGW 25K.
While the rifle is not a replacement for the existing STGW 90 (SIG 550), it is still the first AR-style system in caliber 5.56 × 45mm NATO for the Swiss Army and is a piston-driven system with a monolithic upper receiver, which offers simplified maintenance for the troops. In this video, the guys from AUSTRIA ARMS present the weapon in greater detail.
