Sabotage:

Espionage, Cyber Attacks & Co.

03/30/2025

"Systematic espionage in the Baltic Sea", "Dozens of countries affected by hacker attacks from China", "Russian drones over Germany?" - Such headlines are currently more present in the media than they have been for a long time.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, upcoming elections, international summits, these all increase the interest of foreign intelligence services in obtaining sensitive information and insights, exercising influence in the political space or shaping public opinion with disinformation. In addition, they participate in cyber-attacks, deploy agents, commit acts of sabotage, and are also involved in attempts to circumvent sanctions and to procure components and know-how to produce weapons of mass destruction.

In the 44-page brochure "Espionage, Cyber Attacks & Co. - Threats from Foreign Intelligence Services," the BfV provides insights into the multi-dimensional approach of foreign intelligence services and illustrates the increasingly close interconnection between the real world and cyberspace. In addition, the new publication addresses various means that foreign intelligence services use against Germany. It focuses in particular on the activities of the intelligence services of Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey.

The cyber and espionage defense of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has the task of detecting, analyzing, and warding off the hidden and illegal actions of foreign powers in and against Germany, thereby making a significant contribution to the protection of our democracy.
