Optics:
Fusion for the British
11/21/2024

The British Army is enhancing the combat capabilities of their assault rifles with TALON Fused Weapon Sights. They utilize night vision and thermal imaging as a fusion.

The Talon Fused Weapon Sight is mounted on the rifles SA80 L85 A3 and KS-1 L403 A1, converting their conventional optics into thermal imaging sights. The Talon sight, developed by the defense company Qioptiq, a business unit of Excelitas, "is the most advanced sight ever deployed on an assault rifle by the British Army," they are pleased to announce in England.

The attachment can detect and identify targets at a distance of up to one kilometer in darkness as well as daylight, and is expected to be ready for deployment by 2025. The Talon identifies a potential target based on its body heat, a process known as "thermal detection," and uses an uncooled 12-µm thermal image sensor with 60 Hz, coupled with a nearly silent shutter.
