Most duty shoes are made of leather, which has excellent properties: it is dimensionally stable, durable, and breathable. The following LOWA care tips apply to all shoe models made of smooth and split leather. Newly purchased shoes usually do not require additional care before the first use, but refreshing the leather impregnation is advisable.
If your shoes have gotten wet and dirty, dry them in a well-ventilated room, but not near heat sources. The leather could dry out or crack. Remove the laces and take out the insole so that the care products can reach the hidden areas of your shoe and they can dry well.
Thoroughly brush your shoes to make the leather breathable and air-permeable again. Then, clean them with warm water and a brush. If the shoes are heavily soiled, use a lukewarm soapy solution or a shoe cleaning agent. The cleaning agent opens the pores of the leather and should be rinsed well with water. Since the leather is now in an unprotected state, you should definitely impregnate the shoe!
Be careful when drying: Let your shoes dry in a well-ventilated room. Never leave them in the sun, near the heater, close to an oven, or in the car! Wet leather can "burn," causing irreparable cracks to form. In damp rooms, your shoes can develop mold.
The shoes should be in a slightly damp condition when you spray them with the impregnating spray. The impregnation can penetrate deep into the material through the widely opened pores. After 24 hours, it unfolds its full effect. Your shoes are now water- and dirt-repellent for about three weeks.
If you use your shoes frequently and they are often exposed to moisture, you should treat them with care products. Rub in a wax cream or wax emulsion with a soft brush to keep the shoes resistant. This is also essential for shoes with a GORE-TEX® membrane. Untreated leather dries out, becomes brittle, and cracks. The shoe is then irreparably damaged.
Store your shoes in a shoe bag or box in a dry, airy place. To maintain the shape of the shoe, it is advisable to use a wooden shoe tree. It preserves the shape of the shoe and prevents creases from forming. Alternatively, you can also stuff crumpled newspaper into the toe area. The paper absorbs moisture and maintains the shape. Change the paper daily until the shoes are dry.
Properly care for the lining!
The leather lining should be rubbed with a special leather milk (e.g., Patina Leather Milk, Keralux LCK) from time to time, as the often very aggressive foot sweat containing salts dries out the lining and makes it brittle and hard. The GORE-TEX® lining does not require separate care but can occasionally be cleaned with lukewarm water and a mild soapy solution. CAUTION: Incorrect or insufficient leather care can render the GORE-TEX® shoe membrane ineffective.
Do not wash in the washing machine!
Leather shoes (and synthetic shoes) should never be washed in the washing machine. The mechanical action during the washing process combined with an increased washing temperature can lead to the leaching of color pigments, irreparable damage to the upper materials, and the dissolution of adhesives.
Don't forget about textile materials!
Also, the textile materials of the shoes should be regularly impregnated to improve the material's resistance to water and dirt.
