Unobtainium Gear is usually referred to as equipment that, as the name suggests, is unattainable. We're thinking of something like a GPNVG-18. But it turns out that there is actually a manufacturer who produces some interesting stuff. One of them is the SLEDS Placard, and that's exactly what we want to introduce to you in this review.
So this is how the good piece arrives at your place. Quite simply designed, designed for 5.56 / .223 magazines. There is also a version for 7.62 / .308 magazines.
So far, a Spiritus Mk4 has been used, but this was a bit too big for us at the front. Also, the SLEDS Placard offers some interesting upgrades. As you can see here, we have already mounted ROC buckles.
The placard is also cut on the sides so that regular buckles can be mounted and the whole thing can be used like a chest rig. Here next to the Spiritus Mk4 Rig for comparison.
On the back, there is continuous Velcro and the label. Made in the USA.
A direct comparison between Spiritus Mk4 below and the SLEDS Placard above. Spiritus has a Kydex insert, SLEDS uses TEGRIS for indexing.
This is what it looks like when mounted on a plate carrier. The cummerbund is fixed directly, providing additional stability, nothing sticks out and is flat when not needed. The buckles for mounting on the plate carrier are slightly longer compared to others.
In our case, this is more than desired because it allows us to mount a Thyrm Darkvault on top and still have enough space for the magazines.
Each elastic magazine pocket contains a TEGRIS plate. This is similar to Kydex, looks a bit like carbon, but is thermoplastic. Lightweight and rigid, it makes it easier to insert magazines back into the pocket. The TEGRIS is also slightly outwardly formed towards the top and also serves as a separation, as there is also a small external slip pocket.
The slip pocket can hold pistol magazines, such as one from Glock, or a multitool.
Pulling the magazine out or putting it back in is an absolute upgrade compared to traditional Kydex inserts. We also like that the pockets are separated from each other, ensuring that each pocket always has the same tension. Thanks to the separating plate, deformation of the pocket is also reduced when something is in front of it. However, with a Glock magazine, you can feel it a bit and it's already tight. But it works!
Lasercut-MOLLE is located on the front and provides room for expansions.
Here is an AR15 magazine, Glock 17 magazine, and a Thyrm Cellvault. Well loaded with all of that.
For those who are afraid of losing their magazines, you can additionally mount shock cord at the top to secure the magazines.
There are two small holes on the front and a loop at the back for threading through.
CONCLUSION: The SLEDS Placard from Unobtainium Gear is a lightweight thin placard for those who like it High Speed Low Drag. The TEGRIS is not NIR Compliant, which should be noted. However, the quality and features outweigh for our use case and therefore we can absolutely recommend it.
