From October 9 to 10, the Atlas Common Challenge 2018 took place — the largest exercise of police special units of the European Union with over 1,000 participating policemen.
The exercise, involving 38 different units, consisted of seven scenarios:
#ATLASExercise Baltic Sea: Special Intervention Units from Belgian Federal Police, Carabinieri, and others are deployed to Germany to support the local forces. Due to an imminent threat to the lives of the hostages, the ATLAS partners have conducted the assault. Terrorists have been neutralised and control over the vessel has been established.

The first scenario involved a hostage rescue in the Baltic Sea. Units from Germany, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland participated. They approached the terrorists' boat by water and air and rescued the hostages
#ATLASExercise Spain: the Special Intervention Units have successfully executed the assault on the aircraft. All hostages have been freed and the terrorists detained. Control over the incident has now been handed over to the local authorities.

Next, units from France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Belgium ended an airplane hijacking in Spain. The specialists tested new breaching methods that allow for quicker access to the target.
#ATLASExercise Poland: an intervention of the Special Units on the subway was conducted at 03:00. There were reports of gunfire. By 04:00, the situation was under control and all threats were neutralised. Responsibility for the scene has been handed over to the local authorities.

In Poland, the challenge was to rescue 500 hostages in a subway train. Participating nations: Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia.
#ATLASExercise Slovakia: major attack at a concert attended by 5000 people. Terrorists have taken several hostages and barricaded themselves in a nearby fortress. Special Intervention Units from Slovakia, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia have been deployed. After being briefed they are ready to approach the final assault positions.

The scenario in Slovakia was inspired by the 2015 Paris attacks. Forces from Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Czech Republic had to rescue hundreds of hostages from a building complex. The special units used helicopters, armored vehicles, and parachutists.

#ATLASExercise Iceland: Special Intervention Units have executed simultaneous assaults on the terrorist ship in Iceland and the harbour building in Northern Ireland. All suspects have been detained. Control has been handed over to local authorities.

In the fifth scenario, terrorists took hostages in Iceland and fled towards Northern Ireland. Policemen from Iceland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and England neutralized the threat.
In Germany, there was a train hijacking and a potential chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threat. Units from Germany, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Italy dealt with the mission. CBRN specialists from the French counter-terrorist unit RAID showcased their expertise.

Lastly, units from Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, and Greece stopped a bus hijacking from Northern Greece to Ukraine.
The most significant success of the exercise was the strengthening of cross-border cooperation among European police special units.
