When moving forward, a man needs a lot. More than armor can carry, more than hands can hold. The normal backpack is too much and not segmented enough. So a special combat sustainment pack is needed. There are different solutions for this. Today we present the one from Tactical Assault Gear, the Combat Sustainment Pack (CSP), which is available in Germany at SEUL.
Unlike a classic backpack, the CSP is more segmented and looks more like a back panel that has been configured with MOLLE elongated pockets. Here you can see that three pockets are horizontally adjacent. To describe the size of these pockets in a very German way: two beer bottles fit on the top and bottom, while more than three fit in the middle.
The back not only displays the TAG patch, but also shows that the CSP is meant to be multifunctional: you can wear it as a backpack with very simple straps (no special padding is needed for plate carriers) or simply remove those straps, then attach the pack to the armor with MOLLE. With the shoulder straps, it can also be hung as a Bail Out Bag over the back of a vehicle seat.
But let's start from the top. At the very top, the CSP is open and has three compartments secured with shock cord. Three magazines fit here (practical, as fewer are being slapped onto the carrier) or three flash bangs or other charges. Below that, a horizontal compartment in coyote is visible, in which we have inserted a multitool. Additional bandaging material is stored in the top of the three horizontal compartments.
Behind the magazines is the zip that opens the CSP on the top, revealing a large, flat compartment that runs across the entire back. Here, a large 100 oz hydration bladder can be hung. The exit for the drinking tube is where our fingers are pointing, a star-shaped opening at the upper back.
The middle compartment is larger than the other two, and upon opening it, you will find a special bag that belongs to this kit.
It is made of sturdy mesh, has a handle and a shoulder strap. The CCB (combat casualty bag) is designed to carry a wounded person's plate carrier and equipment. Of course, it can also hold other items, such as the findings of a house search after an attack on a compound.
CONCLUSION: The trend of having less on oneself is good, but not always efficient. Sometimes more is indeed more. Earlier, having six to eight magazines on the person was considered standard in the US, now three are carried in the LBT-6094 or JPC. It can be more sustainable to have more with you. This is where the Combat Sustainment Pack comes into play: three more magazines at hand, more bandaging material, hydration bladder, and even more water (a US quart bottle or the large Nalgene bottle fits in the middle compartment). The full equipment. Of course, the CSP can also be configured purely for a breacher or a medic. The airy mesh bag is also very practical. If it doesn't go on the mission, it is highly suitable for dirty laundry.
