REVIEW: PrincetonTec MPLS

05/07/2011By Redaktion

Another case for shedding light on the situation, because in the dark you can't see as well. MPLS stands for "Modular Personal Lighting System" and you have probably already spotted this small light here and there on a vest or helmet. Today, we want to show you what it can do.

The small light, weighing only 17g, comes with a helmet and MOLLE mount. It can be bent into almost any position through the gooseneck to achieve optimal lighting. It has two light levels, but more on that later.

The MPLS is available in different colors (tan, black, olive) and also in different light colors (red and white). In the pictures, you can see the setup of the MOLLE mount and the light itself. It requires two CR2032 button batteries to shine. The rubber part in the middle is the pressure switch. The light is screwed onto the mount and can be roughly adjusted in an approximately 45° range. Fine-tuning is done through the gooseneck.

The brightness is enough to illuminate a path in front of you, for example, but of course, it's not comparable to a Surefire flashlight. However, this light is not meant for that purpose, it is more or less meant to replace a headlamp.

The operation is very simple:

  • Press once: 1st level.
  • Press again within one second: 2nd level.
  • Press after two seconds: it turns off.
  • If you hold the button down, it will light up at the 1st level, and when you release it, it will immediately go out.

In the image above, you can see the brightness of the 1st level, below is the 2nd level, so it is more than sufficient to read a map or illuminate something 5-10m in front of you.

Conclusion: The PrincetonTec MPLS is a small, useful light that goes unnoticed due to its very light weight and fulfills its purpose well. Mounting it on a helmet or MOLLE makes it versatile, it looks cool, and is reasonably priced.

The PrincetonTec MPLS is available at JB's ProShop and costs €46.99 there (plus shipping).
