Experience: As a UN military observer in Western Sahara

03/12/2021By Redaktion

Under the heading "Learning for Life", Carsten Dombrowski from CAPSARIUS AKADEMIE sheds light on a topic that receives little public attention: Military observers are soldiers, usually officers, who monitor ceasefire or peace agreements in conflict areas for the United Nations:

As a military observer of the German Bundeswehr, I was deployed for six months in Western Sahara. There is enough information material on the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front available on the internet. I consciously avoid making political statements.

At this point, I would like to report on my work, the challenges, and experiences. Impressions that have not yet been shared on the internet, but are still worth mentioning. I invite you to join me on this journey. I will take individual chapters or topics from a vast complex and delve deeper into them.

On our website CAPSARIUS AKADEMIE, these reports will be archived for anyone who wants to read them later.
If you are interested in the work as a UN military observer, feel free to contact me via email or through our contact form. I hope you enjoy my personal experiences.

The selection and pre-training of Military Observers, abbreviated MilBeo

First, one volunteers for these kinds of missions. Upon receipt of this notification, there is a preselection by the MilBeo department at the Operations Command in Potsdam. After acceptance, a lengthy training begins, divided into five modules.

Module 1: Introduction to the UN, the overall situation of the missions, and experiences of individual military observers, duration 1-2 days.

Module 2: Deployment assistant Bravo, medical training, duration 8 days.

Module 3: Medical training for MilBeo, tropical medicine, and more, duration 2 days.

Module 4: English for MilBeo, duration 15 days.

Module 5: Deployment training with final exercise for MilBeo, duration 15 days.

Total duration is approximately 9 weeks.

In Module 1, the initial discussions about the possible deployment area take place. Ultimately, suitability, but above all the need, determines where the candidate will be deployed. Sometimes, medical preparations such as additional vaccinations (e.g. yellow fever) already begin here.

In the next post, I will report on the training. I hope I have sparked your curiosity.

Sincerely, Carsten Dombrowski
