Desert Hawk: Security training in the desert of the Arabian Peninsula

12/10/2021By Redaktion

Heavy cars plow through the hot desert sand. The horsepower-strong engines almost effortlessly push the ton-heavy, specially protected limousines through the dunes or over kilometers of tracks. The occupants watch the surroundings intently. The last checkpoint had made them suspicious, now they seek an alternative route.

A brief flash of light, then a barely audible bang. The car shakes and gravel and other materials hit the body. Quickly everyone realizes, it was an explosion. Now it's time to act calmly and professionally.

"Blue to all, push through. Situation report to Blue." All vehicles quickly leave the scene of the attack to regroup at another, safer location. This time nothing more serious has happened. They were lucky.

Security forces train in scenarios like this in the "Desert Hawk" course in the desert regions around Dubai. They learn the proper handling of armored protection vehicles, driving on difficult terrain, and procedures for technical rescue. Opening a secured vehicle with tools must be learned professionally.

Professional approach or better care must also be learned in case of injury to the occupants. Standard first aid courses are not sufficient in such scenarios. The expected injuries are too severe and the tactical conditions too complex. This type of training, Tactical Medicine, is taught according to international protocols of the so-called TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) and is certified at the end of the course after a successful examination.

With a total of 4 days of training, participants are professionally guided towards the daily goal as well as the overall course objective. The instructors themselves know what they are talking about. They have all been in situations like the ones described at the beginning. This course teaches not gray theory, but rather practical knowledge for practical use. Professionals learn from professionals. This aspect, as well as the exotic, picturesque environment, make the course unique. It's hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for training for action. Sweat when it is necessary to learn hard and sustainably. Recovery and the joy of hospitality help gather strength for the next section after a challenging and instructive day.
