SIG Sauer MCX for German Police

10/10/2017By Redaktion

The Berlin State Police has awarded SIG Sauer GmbH & Co in Eckernförde the contract to deliver several hundred rifles of the MCX type.

A small step for humanity, a big one for SIG Sauer in the German market: After equipping the London Metropolitan Police and the English special unit SAS with such rifles in Europe, this is the first major rifle contract awarded by a state police in Germany. SIG Sauer was able to convince in the competition through the modular and compact design as well as other high-quality technical features.

The MCX rifles are being produced with specifications specially tailored to the wishes of the Berlin police – what exactly that entails is so secret that it is not yet known. The authority does not want it to be publicly disclosed – so the images do not show the specific police configuration, but an MCX that the SPARTANAT editorial team was able to test during their visit to SIG Sauer.

"This contract highlights the trend of arming security forces more heavily with rifles that are slowly replacing the MP5 (manufacturer: Heckler & Koch)," says SIG Sauer CEO Franz von Stauffenberg. In police terms, this is called the "medium-distance weapon" – a euphemism to avoid the word assault rifle. Ultimately, the upgrading to modern weapons in caliber 5.56 mm is about not being under-equipped in case of a terrorist threat.

Fair Competition

SIG Sauer CEO von Stauffenberg attributes the success of this tender not only to the quality of SIG Sauer products, but also to the conditions of the tender: "It was a fair and impeccable competition that was not already tailored to a competitor by the structure of the tender and its conditions."

"The special requirements for the desired ammunition compatibility could be tested for almost a year, a crucial detail for a successful testing of the weapon," says Franz von Stauffenberg.

KSK - unfortunately not SIG Sauer MCX

For example, this was not the case in the tender for the weapons for the Special Forces Command KSK. The ammunition to be used was not available to adapt the specified weapon. Only the eventual winner of the tender had access to the ammunition. This is, although not yet official, a clear dig at Heckler & Koch. Experts believe that the German special forces will receive the HK416. HERE on SPARTANAT is the report on this.

SIG Sauer sees itself on a good path to score in future tenders. "We have a very competitive offer and our team is well positioned to meet all upcoming requirements in Europe," explains Franz von Stauffenberg. After the disappointment with KSK, SIG Sauer will surely stay connected with the police and be able to score with its very good weapon.

German authorities' weapon maybe also with a silencer? Doesn't make as much noise in the city.
