HENSOLDT protects Ukrainian helicopters

06/06/2024By Redaktion

The sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT is once again equipping helicopters of the Ukrainian armed forces with state-of-the-art detection and self-protection sensors. The contract includes additional AMPS (Airborne Missile Protection System) self-protection solutions.

The contract value is in the double-digit million range. With the delivery, HENSOLDT ensures a modern and necessary equipment for the Ukrainian armed forces in light of current events. In June of last year, HENSOLDT already delivered 16 AMPS self-protection solutions to the Ukrainian armed forces for the first time.

"With AMPS, we increase the defense capability of Ukrainian helicopters," says Tanya Altmann, Division Manager Optronics & Land Solutions at HENSOLDT. "By integrating this new platform for us, we protect the crews from a variety of threats, especially from ground-to-air and air-to-air missiles."

The "Airborne Missile Protection System" is a flexible, standalone self-protection solution for helicopters and planes. Due to its modular design, AMPS can be easily configured to meet specific operational requirements and for different mission profiles. AMPS components include the Missile Launch Detection Sensor (MILDS), an AMPS Control and Display Unit (ACDU), and the active confirmation system (MACS), which determines the distance and speed of detected projectiles and eliminates false alarms. The existing Counter Measure Dispensing Systems (CMDS) on the helicopters can continue to operate with the current AMPS configuration.

A high percentage of aircraft losses in recent operational areas have been caused by infrared surface-to-air missiles (IR SAMs). Additionally, laser and radar threats are becoming more common in operational areas. To reliably detect these threats, AMPS can be configured with rocket, laser, and radar warning systems to provide the best possible protection through rapid detection. HENSOLDT has already equipped more than 2,000 different flying platforms with AMPS.
